Palestinian produce available at Workers’ Memorial Day event

NorSCARF has recently discovered that the North Staffs Trade Union Council is to become a distributor for Zaytoun in the North Staffordshire area. Zaytoun, which was founded in 2004, is a community interest company whose aim is to create a market in the UK for artisan Palestinian products. This is from the Zaytoun website:

We are a Fair Trade company and a member of WFTO. In 2009 we launched the world’s first ever Fairtrade olive oil, a tribute to the hard work of the Palestinian producers and processors with whom we work.

Zaytoun’s purchasing policy is that all our goods are bought on a fair trade basis. We work with organisations that are committed to this ethos; we have visited all of them many times over the years and are proud to be working with them.

We source olive oil through all of these suppliers and are developing markets in the UK for their other products including: Olive oil soap from Nablus, almonds and za’atar from Jenin and dates and cous cous from cooperatives near Jericho.

Zaytoun’s policy is that as far as possible all value added activities for these products are kept within the Palestinian economy. To this end both the bottling, printing & labelling is done in Palestine. We’re also actively working to source all our packaging materials through Palestinian suppliers.

There will be a stall selling Zaytoun Palestinian produce at the Workers’ Memorial Day event, organised by the NSTUC, which takes place from 11.15am tomorrow, Saturday 28th April in Hanley. Further details of the event can be found on the NSTUC blog.
