Apart from one isolated English Democrat Party (EDP) candidate in the Hawks Green ward in Cannock, South Staffordshire, we are very glad that there are no far-right candidates standing anywhere else in Staffordshire at the forthcoming local elections in May.
However, the BNP is standing 48 candidates in the West Midlands region, which is more than a third of its national total. There are also National Front (NF) and EDP candidates in the West Midlands. It is therefore extremely important that we support these communities in the same way that they came and helped us. NorSCARF members and the local community leafleted in the Black Country today and there will be anti-fascist leafleting taking place over the next two weekends around the West Midlands area, so please contact firstname.lastname@example.org for more details of how you can help.
A full list of the far-right candidates for the 184 council elections being held on 3 May can be found on the Hope not Hate site.
It was reported in the Sentinel this morning that former BNP Stoke-on-Trent City Councillor Michael Coleman has appeared in court on two charges of racially or religiously aggravated harassment, alarm or distress caused by words or writing. Coleman’s case will be committed to Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on May 24. It is about time that the criminal justice system called Coleman to account for his racist statements. As Islamophobia Watch commented today, though Coleman lost his Meir North seat on Stoke-on-Trent City Council in last May’s elections, he remains the controversial party’s chief organiser in the city and presented an award to Stoke-on-Trent’s BNP activist of the year during a Christmas party last December.
The English Defence League (EDL) has called a demo in Luton on May 5th. Unite Against Fascism is calling on all antiracists and antifascists to join the local Luton community that day for a ‘We are Luton’ multicultural celebration to counter the EDL, with a march from Wardown Park to St George’s Square.
