Anti-Fascists outnumber EDL in Luton as EDL-BFP link-up “announced”

May 9, 2012

Members of NorSCARF joined fellow anti-fascist campaigners last Saturday to March against the English Defence League (EDL). The EDL described the event, in the lead up to Saturday, as a celebration of their 3 years of existence. Only it wasn’t much of a celebration as only around 800 or so fascists attended for a rally held behind a huge steel fence where drunken thugs threw bottles at police and set off fireworks and smoke bombs.

The counter demonstration  saw up to 2000 people, including trade unionists, MP’s, councillors and many locals (including  members of the local Muslim community, which has been targeted by the EDL), march to show their opposition to the EDL. The size of the counter demo sent a clear message to the EDL that they are not welcome in our towns and cities and will be opposed where ever they go.

The EDL planned to announce their link-up to The British Freedom Party (see our blog  here) at a press conference before the rally. But as well as being humiliated by the low turnout for the “celebration” they were also forced to hold there press conference via twitter after anti-fascists complained to the venue.

Locally the BFP have  announced the formation of a new branch in Stoke-on-Trent, which has been set up with the active support and involvement of the Stoke Division of the EDL.  The BFP have appointed one Aaron Brian as their local organiser.  Brian has declared war on the local Asian community.  He accuses Asians of carrying out “racially motivated attacks on white people”; of running “Muslim child grooming gangs”; of “overrunning” the City with “filthy” kebab houses; and being allowed to buy the land for the mosque from the City Council “for a measly sum of one pound sterling”.  Clearly this unpleasant racist is planning to carry on in the tradition of other local fascists like Michael Coleman and Craig Pond.

Following the recent resignation of Councillor Sarah Hill, a by-election is expected shortly in the Trent Vale and Springfield ward of Stoke-on-Trent.  We don’t have a date for the by-election yet, but it is expected to be in late June.  Neither do we have any indication yet of whether there will be any fascist candidates, but if the newly formed BFP (or any other fascist party) take the opportunity to flex their muscles and run a high-level campaign in the ward we will to be ready to hit the ground running with a vigorous anti-fascist campaign.
